A clear and useful introduction to the mythic Meisner technique
"I encountered these books several years ago as I am a college professor and am constantly seeking out fresh ideas and approaches to acting. I had studied with a few people trained in the Mesiner technique, but always felt I was missing something. When I read the first book of the series I realized I had found something I had been seeking: a step by step approach to the Mesiner technique. Each chapter builds upon the last and I, as a student, felt that reading the books gave me practical tools I could bring to the craft of acting. As I am a union actor working primarily in Shakespeare I was surprised to find the Meisner techniques found in these books informed my performing in very interesting and valuable ways. Yes, Meisner preparation and moment to moment work made me a better Shakespearean actor. I also appreciated how much these books helped me tailor my introduction of Meisner technique in the University classroom. I enjoyed working from the books so much that I decided to study directly with the author. I contacted Larry and was thrilled to find he taught several levels of Meisner work.
I have been teaching acting for 30 years and can say that Larry Silverberg is the teacher I have been looking for. His generosity in the classroom. his commitment to student growth, his laser beam attention to the work, his warmth, and his sweet sense of humor combine to create a learning environment that is as unique as it is valuable. These qualities are present in his books. Read them and listen to Larry's "voice"- he is as excited as you are to plunge into the work. This quality is alive in those books and it is evident when you work with Larry.
Frankly these books are of great value to me. Now that Meisner is passed I feel that we are so lucky to have Larry Silverberg's codification of the Meisner techniques. Read them and know that they are written by someone who is grounded in sincerity and dedication to our craft. There is an informal tone to the writing throughout sections of the books- treasure those sections because they represent Larry as he is during a break, talking and exploring with his students. The books are written in the spirit of a tribal elder- Larry speaks to the reader as if he knows you because, in a way, he DOES- since actors are similar in their deep desire to get better and better at stimulating an audience with a vital performance of an author's character. He is the opposite of slick and his books read that way. He is warm, nurturing, and deeply understanding. I celebrate the day I found these books and recommend them to you with great enthusiasm.
Silverberg's Books Offer Great Insight
"These books are wonderful. Simply and uncategorically wonderful. They will give you great insights into the Meisner process, and a step by step guide to how it all fits together. They will inspire you. They will make you think. These books are like having a trusted friend there with you that can help guide you to some understanding of some very basic acting principles and anyone who reads them with perscpective and realistic expectations will be glad they did. I for one am deeply grateful to Mr. Silverberg. He has preserved Meisner's teachings for future generations in a very clear and concise outline which is more than sufficient to convey the major components of Meisner's work. I highly recommend them!"
Couldn't Put It Down!
"I have been a fan of Larry Silverberg and his books for a while now, and his latest book, TRUE ACTING TIPS, is another winner. When I received my book in the mail I opened it up immediately, planning on taking a quick glance through the book. I couldn't put it down. These tips are full of passion, intriguing thoughts and challenges, and are surprisingly emotionally intimate. Every actor should read this as a reminder that we must be connected to one another, we must look out for one another, and we must strive for being fully committed to what we are doing on stage and off. I am an actress and a high school theatre teacher and will use this all the time! Each of the tips will make for a great start to discussions and lessons, and on a personal level I will turn to it often as a source of hope and joy. This is a great resource of inspiration for actors, directors, teachers, and theatre students, and can be applied not just to the world of theatre, but also to life in general. This book is going to be on my desk at school and will be dog-eared and ragged in a very short time!"
Bravo For Silverberg
"I have been a professional actor for 30 years. About fifteen years ago I was verylucky. I picked up Larry Siverberg's first book on the Sanford Meisner approach. It changed my life as an actor, and as a teacher. I know of no finer book on acting, and I have read a lot of them. It is the clearest, the most step by step, and the most inspirational book on true acting that has ever been written. This also holds for the other three books in his series. They opened a path that I could begin to follow - a long and very difficult path, but a wonderous and life changing journey. It showed me where my training was lacking, and what real actor training could be. It inspired me and gave me a map to use to begin exploring with fellow actors the craft of acting. And it lead me to seek out new teachers. I am a better actor because of these books. I have used Larry Silverber's books in many university acting and directing classes. When I started using his first volume, teaching became fun and exciting again. I have seen his approach work with so many students, and it is miraculous. I can not recomend his books highly enough as either an introduction to what true acting can be, or as the beginning of a wonderful journey."
Amazing Series of Books!!
"As both a professional actor and an acting instructor I cannot recommend Larry's "The Sanford Meisner Approach Workbook" series highly enough. Having studied and applied the Meisner technique as an actor for 14 years and having taught it now for four, I find Larry's series to be the most straightforward and accessible breakdown of Sandy's technique. I teach acting in the BFA program at Central Washington University in Ellensburg WA and we currently offer a total of 50 weeks of Meisner training over a two year period. Larry's "Workbook One" is one of the required texts in the first year and the remaining three books in the series are required in the second year. I, and my students, have found that their experience is enhanced by reading the chapters, or sessions, in the book that correspond to the work we are doing in class. I have seen their connection to their others, their art, their community and themselves strengthen and deepen as we work on this technique and the exercises together. As an actor and/or an acting teacher you cannot go wrong with The Meisner Technique and you cannot go wrong with Larry Silverberg's "The Sanford Meisner Approach" series. I highly recommend it!"
Takes the mystery out of acting - thank God!
"I studied Meisner for three years, and it is by far the most practical, reliable, learnable technique out there. I also teach, and find that the technique gets students competent quickly, and in a year's time, very good. In my experience, after a year or two, most every student is better than the actors you see in prime time TV and many are up there with major film stars, if not better. I am aware of no other technique that delivers these kinds of results.
I deeply appreciate Silverberg's series because it lays out the Meisner excercises in a fun way without dumbing them down My copies are dog-eared and marked with notes. They're acting bibles. If you're still on the fence, please know that Meisner students get work. For working actors, there is no better technique for cold-readings and monologues. The technique also makes actors easy to direct, as it allows them to quickly translate cold instructions into fresh emotional circumstances without having to get all heady about it, and without a lot of rehearsal. There isn't enough being written about the technique, in my opinion. Silverberg's contribution is seminal. Please purchase the entire series of 4 workbooks. You will not regret it.
A Most Inspirational Book!
"As an acting professor for the past 30 years for 3 different universities and as a private coach, all of Larry Silverberg's book are incredibly important to my teaching. I have been fortunate enough to have been certified as an instructor of the Sanford Meiser Acting Technique as taught by Larry Silverberg with the True Acting Institute, so needless to say I have all of his books, use them in all of my Theatre/TV/Film acting classes and my Audition Technique class. TRUE ACTING TIPS has now become a text that not only gives me Larry's and Sandy's pearls of wisdom to share with my students, but it also serves as an inspiration everyday. I start my day, with my hot cup of tea and reread the pages I have read previously and add one more everyday. This helps to solidify them in my mind and keeps me passionate about the core of truthfulness necessary for this technique to help young artist's soar. I have added it to my long list of Larry Silverberg books that I recommend to my seniors and to my fellow actor's and professors."
"Having studied with Meisner in New York and now teaching this method to young film students, the four workbooks based on Meisner's work are invaluable. Has really helped me to dissect the techniques that have become second nature in my own work, in order to pass them on to those who will never have the opportunity to study with the technique master himself."
Silverberg distills Meisner's Technique to its Essence
"Any study of the craft of acting will invariably lead you back to Stanislavski. The big three acting teachers (Meisner, Adler and Strasberg) were all attempting to make the grandfather of naturalistic acting accessible to the American actor, and by extension, the American theatre. The difficulty in Stanislavski's books (An Actor Prepares, Building a Character & Creating a Role) is that they are written from the first person perspective or they present what is essentially a transcript of the classroom.
Meisner evolved Stanislavski's principles. Silverberg has broken them down with precision and made them accessible. It is not a book one reads "to know" how to act. It is a workbook where one must "do" the exercises. When one does them with a partner (and hopefully with a teacher to guide them) they have a palpable result and give the actor a technique (an organic habit) that they no longer think about but do instinctually. Thank you, Larry, for sharing Sandy's life work with the rest of the world.
"Silverberg's Meisner workbook series is a jewel for acting teachers and students alike! Filled with a step-by-step approach and essential exercises that allow actors to genuinely understand what it means to "live truthfully under imaginary circumstances" onstage, Silverberg's books are direct and practical, yet also astoundingly inspirational. As a university acting professor, the artistic growth that I have witnessed in my students as a result of this material is phenomenal. Do yourself a favor and read this series. I cannot recommend this work highly enough!"
"I studied in New York and LA with an outstanding second generation Meisner teacher for 3 years over 30 years ago. When I decided to pick up the work again, I was excited to see Larry's workbooks. I was amazed to see how closely they followed what I had learned. Sandy's approach to acting is brilliant and to see it so faithfully communicated in a format that would be the most helpful for someone who really cared to learn is so exciting to me. Obviously it's best to have a live teacher. But sometimes that can backfire as well. If your teacher has decided to embellish Meisner's technique with his or her own brand, you now have something that is compromised from the genius of the original. I believe that Larry has done an excellent job of providing for us a "touchstone" to use and go back to in staying true to the original intent. I have used these workbooks for over 2 years now with other actors and have found them to be just as life changing as when I was in the studio in New York.
